New workout
My trainer recommended interval running the other day. Between my
boring jogs and his urging that I try- I went for it Saturday at the gym. It’s a fantastic
way to get your heart rate up fast and have a quicker workout. You run at your
normal pace for 2 minutes then you do 30-60 seconds (depending on how your
hearts feels!) at a high intensity near-sprint. Then you go back to your regular
pace and repeat the process for 25- 30 minutes. By 4 minutes I was winded. It
was tough but made the workout go fast and I enjoyed the challenge.
It’s easier on a treadmill but I tried it road running yesterday and it
was tricky. Since you don’t have the treadmill pulling your legs to
a higher speed you have to mentally prepare for the upcoming push.
For me, it required a lot of concentration during the sprints to make sure
I didn’t fall back to the easier pace. I think the idea of a 212 effort helped
me maintain the faster speed during the sprints, although at times I spaced
out and realized I was running slower than I should be.
Here’s a 3 minute video about the 212 idea of effort: http://www.just212.com/video/ .
It’s a video based on a book that my boss Sam wrote.
